The importance of critique is fundamental to all music learning methods. There are constant practice (or review) listed as part of most music education and training strategies, and it’s no less important in educating the next generation of musicians. So when the new music teacher ask your kid to practice for the coming week or review a favorite piece for another, it doesn’t necessarily mean your kid didn’t play… wrong. If a child isn’t enjoying what they’re doing, even if they think they are playing it perfectly, there is an underlying problem.
So how do we deal with this? Usually, by providing visual cues that the student has engaged in a particular area of learning. This can be in the form of either written feedback (as in my Guitar Tricks lesson) or pictures (as in my piano for two video’s lesson). For example, I’ve used charts on my website that illustrate which notes are harder to play and which ones are easier to play, so that you can tailor your lessons to your students’ needs. However, the importance of reviewing for music instruction is not just about providing feedback to the student on what they are doing. Reviewing helps you think about how you are teaching, how you are presenting the information, what you are communicating to your students, and how you are communicating with each other. For example, my Ph.D. candidate at the University of Utah reviewed his empirical literature and found significant relationships between meta-analyses and systematic reviews. Meta-analyses provide quantitative evidence that a research question has been answered. A systematic review synthesizes the results of previous studies on a topic, using different types of statistical methods.
Now, back to my Guitar Tricks example… When my son presented me with his latest work of music theory, I asked him what sources he used for his research question: “How did you arrive at the book’s main ideas, and which books did you use to support your ideas?” This was important because I needed to know where he got the ideas from, what types of studies he used to support them, and whether any of his research questions were true. We went over the bookshelf and researched more, talked more, and discussed more with my husband about this topic than we ever had before! This is an important lesson for all of us, but especially for parents, because it highlights the importance of engaging the student.
Finally, as teachers and researchers become aware of the importance of reviews, they are beginning to notice the impact that these efforts can have. Less homework and class time is being devoted to completing tasks based on past research outputs and instead using current and future research directions to support instruction. Teachers are able to help students better understand concepts and they can use reviews to give students a more complete idea of the literature. Researchers are able to increase their understanding of the literature by reviewing past studies, which helps them in their future research endeavors. In essence, reviews and synthesis make the whole of academic research more transparent.
These three points are just a few of the many that can be made about the importance of review articles. For a good review article, a teacher or researcher must select a topic carefully, outline the literature, explain the methodology, and describe the results of their research. Then, they must integrate past research with their own knowledge, in a manner that makes sense to the student. Finally, they must make their point in a way that is clear and concise for the reader. The reader will be drawn to a paper that makes a good review article, rather than one that is confusing or overly complex.
